If you are in the Harrisburg or Hershey area on business or pleasure, and if you are interested in history and particularly the Civil War era history, you may also wish to check out the National Civil War Museum. This museum is located at 1 Lincoln Circle at Reservoir Park in Harrisburg (717-260-1861). The museum was built next to a public park on a hill which has a beautiful view of the gap in the mountains where the Susquehanna River cuts through just north of Harrisburg.
This museum markets itself as the only Civil War museum, in the country, which presents the views of both the Union and the Confederacy in its presentation of exhibits. We have been to this museum twice and greatly enjoyed our visits there. We recommend allowing at least two and a half to three hours to tour the museum thoroughly. Also, they periodically have presentations by historians at this museum.
The other thing that is interesting about this museum is its relative proximity to the battlefield and the new visitor’s center at the National Park in Gettysburg. If you are making a trip to Gettysburg it is not that onerous to add a visit to this museum, in Harrisburg, to your trip. An interesting side note about this museum is that its creation was the result of the efforts of the former mayor of Harrisburg, Stephen Reed. He donated a number of artifacts from his own private collection to this museum.
